A visit to the Eric Carle Museum

The Eric Carle Museum celebrates illustrators of children’s books, and is a very nice little stop if you are visiting the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.  Right now at the museum, you can see some original artwork and sketches by Eric Carle and Garth Williams (i.e. Charlotte’s Web illustrator), make a craft to take with you, watch a short narrated film  of a children’s book and hang out in their fantastic children’s library.  Their lovely gift store is also fantastic, and they did have a nice looking cafeteria (though we were saving our appetites for some local home-made ice cream!)

I was a little bummed that half of their exhibit halls were closed for installation, but I guess that has to happen sometime.  My younger son really liked the short film, and my oldest was fascinated by the artist sketches for book illustrations that demonstrated to him that his creative process is very similar to the professionals!

We will visit again when we go back to the area for camping.
