Hour of Code

December was a busy month for us, including some awesome opportunities to learn more about technology.  One of the awesome moms in our area organized the “Hour of Code” at a local church.  My boys had a great time!

According to their website:

The Hour of Code is an opportunity for anyone to learn the basic concepts of Computer Science with drag and drop programming. This is a game-like, self-directed tutorial starring video lectures by Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies. Learn repeat-loops, conditionals, and basic algorithms.

Jenn had everything very well organized, including print-outs, a large display board and a monitor at the front of the room.  There were also lots of power strips available for everyone’s laptops.

My older son caught on a little faster than my younger one, although they were both hesitant at first to dive in. Once they got started, they were both able to accomplish a lot.  The tutorials used object based programming (Scratch) to help the kids learn the basic logic that it takes to program.

The hour of code also made more advanced programming tutorials available for the kids to learn even more if they have the interest. These tutorials are still available for you to use now with your student or at any time.

If your student is really interested in technology and coding, here are some other websites you can try:

http://scratch.mit.edu/

Learning coding is a great way for children to learn logic based thinking that also provides exciting visual results.  I hope you try it for yourself!

Best,
Krysten
