Higgins Armory and Museum, Worcester, MA

The Higgins Armory in Worcester Massachusetts closed recently and moved it’s collection to the Worcester Art Museum. We were fortunate enough to get to one of the last Homeschool Days!

The architecture of the building alone is incredible (it is one of the first, if not THE first, building constructed from only steel and glass. It was amazing to see the vast collection took my breath away. Even my tween and teen were engaged in the “please touch” room which featured samples of armor to try on, a giant chess board and games from medeival times.

According to Wikipedia:

…from its founding in 1931 until 2004 it was “the only museum in the country devoted solely to arms and armor,”and had the second largest arms and armor collection in the country behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The collection consisted of 2,000 objects, including 24 full suits of armor.

The new exhibit at the Worcester Art Gallery won’t be available until 2015, but when it opens, I can’t wait to see what they will do with the collection. It will definitely be worth the trip.
