Field Trip: Heifer Farm

We are doing a fundraiser this year with our DIY Explorers – asking them to bring in recyclables that give a deposit to raise money to buy an animal through

Heifer Farm

From the Heifer website:

We empower families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity – but our approach is more than just giving them a handout. Heifer links communities and helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Our animals provide partners with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market.

When many families gain this new sustainable income, it brings new opportunities for building schools, creating agricultural cooperatives, forming community savings and funding small businesses.

Heifer Farm1It was a day that threatened rain, but thankfully, it held off and ended up being a really beautiful day.

After watching a video about Heifer’s projects around the globe, we got to see some of the animals that Heifer helps distribute to the countries that they serve. We saw goats, sheep and pigs before heading into the Global Village.

The Global Village has examples of typical housing in the needy areas of the world where Heifer does it’s work – including the Appalachian region of the United States. Heifer’s goal is to help empower people by teaching them about raising animals and food that will help them to be self-sufficient and sustain themselves.

We also saw some beautiful gardens that are planted around the village and also on an acre of land with a breathtaking view.

One of the most memorable things for me was a stove powered by processed animal waste (methane) which was used for both cooking and heating. Brilliant!

I highly recommend this field trip. It was very inspiring for the kids who are now hoping to help buy purchasing an animal for one of the families that Heifer serves.
